Foodbanks see a 40 per cent rise in the number of parcels handed out in Hull

The numbers using foodbanks have risen once again with the amount of parcels handed out in Hull up by over 40 per cent in 6 months.

The Trussell Trust says 320-thousand people nationwide used a foodbank..

In Hull nearly 4 thousand parcels were handed out between April and September.

There was a 40 per cent rise in Selby.

However the East Riding of Yorkshire saw a 10 per cent drop

We spoke to Jessica Foster, from the Trussell Trust about the figures.

"People are coming who can't afford to cook food, they don't want to put their ovens on for a long time".

"They're looking for food that can be made simply in a kettle or doesn't need heating up."

"It's creating a tsunami of need that's heartbreaking."

"The cost of living is rising so sharply and so steeply, we know people who are working and are skipping meals and are not heating and are coming to foodbanks."

"Foodbanks are having to open outside their normal hours so those who are working can access support."

"People are being forced to use foodbanks, something no one ever wants to do."

"People in work, people on benefits, people with families, people who are on their own, people who are carers."

It's sweeping through our country and it's heartbreaking to see it."
