A charity in the East Riding says despite a recent decline in the number of rough sleepers - there are still plenty of people who need help this festive period.

Emmaus run an outreach service across the East Riding to help get people off the streets and get them the help they need.

They're appealing for Christmas care packages that will be given out to rough sleepers in Hull and the East Riding this December. The aim behind the appeal is to ensure all local homeless people receive some much-needed essentials and a few festive treats this Christmas.

All donated packages will be distributed to rough sleepers by the Emmaus Hull & East Riding Outreach team. The rough sleeper Outreach service runs 365 days a year and is funded by Hull City Council and East Riding Council.

Suggested essential items to go within the Christmas boxes include underwear, socks, baby wipes, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary towels, hand warmers, hats, gloves, rain ponchos, torches, snacks and treats.

Additional items include colouring books and pencils, puzzle books, novels, notepads, sleeping bags and pens. A handwritten note or short letter could also be included for the recipient.

Alex Slater, Finance and Fundraising Manager at Emmaus Hull & East Riding said;

“We do this every year and it is so nice to be able to pass on the gifts from members of the public. Christmas can be a lonely, sad time of the year for a lot of people but especially those that sleep rough in our region or indeed are in temporary accommodation. These gifts are always received with a thank you and a smile.”

The donated items can be put into a shoe box, rucksack or plastic bag and do not require Christmas wrapping. Boxes can be dropped off at any of the Emmaus Hull & East Riding charity shops which include The Emmaus Furniture Superstore (32 Lockwood Street), Emmaus Newland (193 Newland Avenue) and the Emmaus Emporium (28 Whitefriargate). Alternatively, donors can email louise@emmaushull.org.uk to arrange a free collection from any HU postcode.

Emmaus Hull & East Riding supports 30 formerly homeless people (known as companions) by providing them with a stable home, personal support and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity raises funds through its three retail outlets.
