A charity is calling for a major review into food poverty suffered by children.

The Childhood Trust say measures aimed at tackling the cost-of-living crisis do not go far enough- leaving children at risk of malnutrition or 'worse'.

Here in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire - a quarter of charities who rely on Fareshare for food parcels are primarily giving to families with children.

Cllr Linda Tock is the portfolio holder for children services at Hull City Council – she said:

“You hear stories of children going to school without breakfast, everybody is pulling out the stops at the moment and I know schools are looking at what additional things they can do.

“In some cases, people who have never struggled before are struggling now, parents who are working are really feeling the pinch.”

Hull City Council have got plans to support families with young children over the Christmas school holidays.

Linda added:

“We’ve got a program that’s going to involve 50 community groups who are going to provide activities and food. It will start on the 19th and there will be leisure centre’s providing free swimming.”
