It may still be more than 6 months until the festive season but people in Beverley are already able to enjoy a Christmas tree, because it hasn't been taken down from last year.

It's all down to a bird which has started nesting in the tree at Wednesday market around 6 months ago and Beverley Town council decided to leave it up.

They felt it was unfair to remove it under the circumstances.

The bird decided to make the tree its home shortly before Christmas which led to the decision not to take it down in the first place.

The Town Council's website says they'd received messages of thanks and support for making sure the tree remains in place to protect wildlife.

It is against the law to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of wild bird when it's in use.

We are fully aware of the situation and simply have to adhere to the law

They say they're working with East Riding of Yorkshire council to monitor the situation.

The tree will only be removed once there's proof to everyone's satisfaction that the nest is no longer in use.

Councillor Alison Healy told their website:

“Whilst some people may think we’ve forgotten to remove the tree, Beverley Town Council wants to assure them that this is not the case.

We are fully aware of the situation and simply have to adhere to the law.

In the meantime, we hope the birds enjoy their temporary town centre, high-rise residence.”
