Changes proposed to fatal Scunthorpe junction
Motorists will no longer be able to turn right onto the Kingsway from Brumby Wood Lane under new safety proposals

Motorists will no longer be able to turn right onto the Kingsway from Brumby Wood Lane under new safety proposals.
It is hoped that the proposal would reduce accidents following the death of a popular scooter rider at the Scunthorpe junction last year.
Ian White had been turning right onto the A18 when he tragically collided with an oncoming vehicle.
A safety review was launched following his death, and residents can now have their say on the proposed changes.
It would bring Brumby Wood Lane in line with the nearby Church Lane, where motorists can only turn left onto the A18 Kingsway.
Double yellow lines would also be painted on Brumby Wood Lane to improve traffic flow.
The current crossing points at the junction would be replaced with pedestrian and cycle-friendly parallel crossings.
Damon White, a relative of Ian, said:
“On behalf of the family, I have worked closely with the council to draw up these proposals to change the configuration of this junction.
“The consultation is an important step in our shared goal to make joining the Kingsway safer. I would like to appeal to those who use this road to come forward and share their thoughts on the plans so we can make a positive difference to the safety of the A18.”
The Lost and Lonely scooter club, where Ian was a well-known member, led calls for a review of the junction after his death.
His partner Karen White said at the time:
“Ian’s death was a tragic accident, but it was an avoidable accident.Ian was an experienced rider who died through no fault of his own. Everyone knows the difficulties with that junction.”
Residents can register their views on the proposed changes through North Lincolnshire Council website when it begins later this month.
Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“I welcome this consultation – we take road safety concerns raised by residents extremely seriously as part of our continual approach to improving our road network.
“We have worked closely with the town’s MP Holly Mumby-Croft to bring about this consultation. The no right turn directive has been in place for a number of years now on neighbouring Church Lane and these proposals are an extension of this, making joining the Kingsway consistent and easy to follow.
“The plans will also contribute to the transformation of Scunthorpe’s cycle network. The introduction of additional, safer crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists will help to connect Berkeley Circle to The Pods and the University Campus on Ashby Road and the Ridgeway cycle route.”
