A ceremony has taken place in Hull today to mark 50 years since the triple trawler tragedy.

The three weeks from 11 January to 5 February 1968 was the bleakest in the history of Hull’s fishing community when three trawlers - St Romanus, Kingston Peridot and Ross Cleveland - sank with just one survivor from the 60 crewmen.

To mark the anniversary today a trawler's boat anchor has been dedicated to those who lost their lives in the grounds of Valiant Drive where the blocks of flats are named after the three trawlers.

Yvonne Blenkinsop lost her dad in the tragedy and told us the pain is still so fresh even after so many years: "I've lost so many friends, and I knew loads of those young men. My brother went out to sea and they only came back when the industry went down or they'd still be out there now.

"I got to know about my father from the telephone and I just couldn't believe it. I just kept walking up and down the stairs and I don't know why.

"This area has always been fishing and trawling, and we must never forget them."
