Campaign For More Dog Foster Carers In Yorkshire

It's to help pets at risk of being harmed in domestic abuse relationships.

An increasing number of pets in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire are in need of being rehomed because their owner's in an abusive relationship.

Last year almost 70 dogs in our region had to be taken in by volunteers because of domestic violence.

The Dogs Trust has today launched a campaign - asking people in our region to consider fostering animals that are at risk of being harmed.

Amy Bryan is from the Hull Animal Welfare Trust and says cases are continuing to rise. She told Viking FM:

"There was one case where one dog had had her face stamped on by the person in the home. She had broken all of her jaw and had smashed all her teeth. The lady who brought the dog in was devastated that she was going to lose the dog but she was going into safe housing so she couldn't take her with her. The dog also needed urgent veterinary attention to help treat her injuries.

"We are seeing cases like this more and more but the problem that we see is that these owners can't take their pets with them when they go into these safe houses. It's a great thing that there is volunteers who are willing to foster these animals until their owners manage to get themselves sorted.

"If you've got the space to foster a dog then do it, it's a great feeling to be able to help an animal and a person. To see the animal then go back to a person who has been through such a bad time, it gives you a really good feeling and also you are helping that animal and the person."
