As the number of people seeking treatment for drink or drug issues rises in Hull new funding's been received to help people anyone struggling with the issue.

Over 3 million pounds has been promised to support people in the city with drink or drug problems.

There's been a high demand for treatment.

Gilda Nunez Public Health Health lead for drugs and alcohol at Hull City Council spoke to us about the issues involved.

We have higher rates of dependency and more accessing treatment

She told us: "In our population when we compared ourselves to the Yorkshire and Humber region we have much higher rates of alcohol dependency in the population and we also have more people accessing alcohol and drug treatment."

"We have the demand - we have the need."

"We have seen an increase in the numbers of new people starting treatment."

It means we can carry on reducing alcohol or drug offences

"This is positive in a way because people are seeking support but also that is posing challenges ahead in terms of sustainability and how we keep on expanding the system."

"We can carry on building or reducing the number of alcohol related offences - reducing the number of alcohol or drug related deaths - reducing as well the pressure to health services."

"The Government took into consideration those areas where there was higher needs and higher prevalence of alcohol and drug use."

"Hull meets both criteria."
