Police Warn About New Year Drink Driving
Humberside Police want everyone to be vigilant for New Year drink driver
We've all got a responsibility to stop people drink-driving this New Year - according to the man in charge of policing Humberside's roads.
Family and friends should intervene to prevent loved-ones who might be under the influence from getting behind the wheel says Chief Inspector Glenn Suttenwood and he wants us all to report any suspicious activity we see on the roads.
CI Suttenwood said: "The reality is that when you've had a drink and you get behind that wheel your driving is impaired quite significantly. So the chances are that if you're weaving all around the road or you're going from A to B and your driving isn't what it should be people will phone us. As soon as they phone us, we will come looking for you, we will find you and we will breathalyse you - and the consequences, well, you bear that then."
"People take those risks, what they don't really appreciate then is not only that they put themselves at risk but also people who get in the car with them, or other road users or pedestrians and it has devastating effects"
"Your insurance premiums, for years to come will be excessive, your employment thereonin might be hindered somewhat because of your convictions, in terms of any driving jobs. But worst case scenario you've got to live with the fact if you've gone out there and you've caused an accident and potenitially killed somebody, not only are you looking at a term of imprisonment, but actually you've got to live with that on your concience for the rest of your life."
