Petition after fatal crash on Hull's Spring Bank delivered to councillors
Residents are calling for safety improvements after Zena Jackson and her 6-year-old daughter were killed when a lorry hit them on a pedestrian crossing on the street.
A petition calling for safety improvements on Hull's Spring Bank after a mother and child died has been handed in to the local authority today.
It's exactly 2 weeks since 43-year-old Zena Jackson and her 6-year-old daughter Cidalia were killed when a lorry hit them on a pedestrian crossing on the street.
A petition, signed by 1,500 people, is asking Hull City Council to now take urgent action.
It was set up by resident Anita Claxton who knew the victims and handed it in at Hull's Guildhall this afternoon. She told Viking:
"The little girl was always really happy, running around the shop I worked in and I saw the mum with more than just the child that died and she was a lovely person and loved being a mum. It wrenches at my heart that they have now got to be brought up without a mum because of this fatal accident.
"I couldn't believe the news when I heard. It is just horrific and the fact that my co-workers from Spring Bank were first on the scene and I really do feel for them that were stood there helping.
"I have had so many people coming up to me telling me how they have nearly had an accident on the corner near Stanley Street so to get something done to stop people trying to cross on the corner so they are only having to look one way and putting a zebra crossing there, that will help the elderly and people crossing with children."
A Hull City Council spokesperson told us:
"We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those involved in the tragic road traffic collision.
"The next step is for us to work directly with the police to undertake a thorough road safety investigation and to explore appropriate solutions."
