She told Viking FM news of the award came as a complete surprise:

"I got a letter about six weeks ago from the Cabinet Office which I'm not used to receiving letters from and I was totally surprised by it but then the rule is that you're not allowed to tell anybody, so I'm now looking to telling my family and I have all my grandchildren coming down this evening.

"I suppose when you get these very official-looking letters, you think you must have done something wrong so I remember opening it very carefully. I'm very proud indeed and humbled because a lot of people do an enourmous amount of good things for their community but not everyone is as lucky to be honoured as I will be."

She told us about the work she's been involved in:

"I came to the town and the first thing I was involved with was saving the Friary, which was going to be knocked down and from then on I got more and more involved in campaigns in the community. I see places, like Beverley Minster, as legacies as we all have to have roots in the past."
