Jenner To Inspire Support For Yorkshire Transgender Community

Published 9th Jun 2015

After the world watched her transform from Bruce to Caitlyn Jenner, the magazine featuring her story will arrive on our news-stands this morning

But one Leeds man, who was born a woman, has told Radio Aire there's still a long way to go before transgender people get the support they need.

Louie Stafford helps others like him across Yorkshire.

“The NHS is routinely failing trans people across the board, massive waiting lists, there's a lack of compassion and understanding for mental health problems that affect trans people.

“The kind of surgeries Caitlyn Jenner will be talking about – those are the kind of surgeries that are nigh-on impossible to access through the NHS.”

He says it's great that Caitlyn's story's putting trans issues in the spotlight but with that needs to come more action to tackle them.

“Everyone’s talking about it. I think that anything that puts these issues at the forefront is a really good thing but I also think there’s a lot of work to still be done for the transgender community and her story is just one story - and it’s the story of someone who’s very rich who can afford to do the transition in a certain way.”
