£13m cash boost for Hull City of Culture
The Chancellor made the announcement in today's budget.
Chancellor George Osborne has promised a £13 million cash boost for Hull for next year's city of culture.
He's made the announcement in his Budget speech in the House of Commons this afternoon.
City and cultural leaders in Hull have welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement of a £13 million contribution to help Hull host and secure a lasting legacy from its year as UK City of Culture 2017.
Councillor Stephen Brady, Leader of Hull City Council, said:
“This is a most welcome contribution towards Hull’s year as UK City of Culture and its legacy. It will help to ensure that we are able to deliver our ambitions for the celebrations, which we are proud to be hosting on behalf of the whole nation.
“As a Council, we are making a huge investment in the city, both for our year as UK City of Culture and as part of a long-term plan to regenerate our economy, create local jobs and ensure that Hull is able to play its part in the Northern Powerhouse to the full. Investment in our cultural assets is a key part of that and I am pleased to hear that some of the funding is to help with the refurbishment of Hull New Theatre, one of our most important venues and a key legacy investment.”
Martin Green, Chief Executive of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, the company set up to deliver the 2017 cultural programme, added:
“This is a massive vote of confidence in Hull’s ability to deliver this national event and to secure a legacy that will change the city forever. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Chancellor, Lord Mandelson, Alan Johnson, Hull City Council and the team at the culture company who worked have collectively to deliver this.”
