More than £10,000 has been raised by the friends of a young footballer who died in Newport last weekend.

19-year-old Tom Moreton was last seen at around 2am on Sunday morning after a night out in the town, however his body was discovered in the River Usk later that day - on Sunday evening.

Croesyceiliog AFC, as well as his friends and family, have thanked everyone who's donated to the fundraiser in his memory.

Organisers of the fundraiser say they're 'overwhelmed' with the outpouring of love shown for Tom and his family.

In a statement, Korben Bennett & Shauna Martin said: "We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love and financial support we have witnessed in the first 24 hours. Surpassing £5,000 within the first 3 hours is truly remarkable, and we are genuinely blown away by the overwhelming love and support shown for Tom and his family thus far.

"I would like to stress the importance of continuing to share and support Tom's family during these difficult times."

Tom's football club, Croesyceiliog AFC, have also paid tribute to him on social media.

Yesterday, a spokesperson said: "Thank you to everybody that has already donated. We've already raised just over £7,000 in such a short space of time which shows how supported his family are and how loved Tom was.

"All donations are going to Tom's family in support of the cost of his funeral and anything else they may need.

"Please continue to share around and donate as much as you possibly can."

In a statement on June 26, Gwent Police said: "The body of a man was found in the River Usk in Newport at around 6.15pm on Sunday 25 June.

"Formal identification has taken place and the man was identified as Tom Moreton, 19, from Cwmbran who was reported as missing to Gwent Police on Sunday 25 June. His next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner."
