A man who admitted to killing a father of four in Cardiff has been sentenced to 6 years in prison

43-year-old David Smith admitted to the manslaughter of 40-year-old Luke Higgins on Hansen street in Cardiff city centre on the 14th of September last year.

Mr Higgins was attacked near the Huggard Centre, a shelter set up for homeless people and rough sleepers to seek help in Cardiff. David Smith punched him one time in the head. Mr Higgins fell to the floor as he was made unconscious.

Mr Higgins was taken to the University Hospital of Wales where he died two days later.

David Smith pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the 27th of November and has been sentenced to 6 years behind bars and three years on licence.

In a statement released at the time of his death, Luke Higgins family said “We are devastated by the loss of Luke who was a father of four and one of nine siblings.

“Luke was a much-loved father, brother and uncle, and will be greatly missed.”
