Man appears in court following fatal M4 crash

A man has appeared before Newport Magistrates Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a collision between a car and van on the M4 in south Wales.

A four-year-old girl died and her three-year-old brother is in a critical condition in hospital after the crash near Newport on Saturday afternoon.

41 year old Martin Newman from Croeserw in the Afan Valley has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving along with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He'll appear at Newport Crown Court on 21st February.

Four people were taken to hospital following the collision which happened westbound between Junction 28 and Junction 29 of the M4 at around 1:45pm.

The children's mother remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The motorway was closed in both directions for a time after the accident.
