The death of a Caerphilly grandmother has been described as 'violent and unnatural' after she was attacked by a dog in her own home.

An inquest heard that 83-year-old Shirley Patrick died in hospital 17 days after being mauled by a large black XL Bully Cross Can Corso breed, which was seized by police and later put down.

Shirley, who was a retired nurse suffered 'traumatic lacerations' and significant wounds to her head, body, face and arms.

An inquest was opened today and adjourned by Gwent Coroner Caroline Saunders.

Shirley's provisional cause of death was given as 'sepsis caused by pneumonia and infected scalp wounds' following the attack.

Four people were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury but have since been release under conditional bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Sedgebeer said: "If you have concerns or any information regarding this dog and its previous behaviour then please do stop and talk with us."
