Vulnerable veterans were very happy
Public service pupils of Bishop Auckland College work with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity to provide 78 VE Day Afternoon teas to local vulnerable veterans.
SSAFA South West Durham Division delivered the afternoon teas and were able to check in on isolated veterans, chatting on the doorstep and letting them know that support is there if they need it.
Mike Donne, Branch President for Durham said: “We have had an association with Bishop Auckland College's Uniformed Services/Criminology course tutors Rachel Thompson and Sharron Hogarth for a few years now. Sharron was also involved in the catering courses too as she is a former Army Chef. In those years, the students have been really supportive of their tutors and enjoyed participating in veteran's community work. This year they have been truly outstanding. We also get to know about those students that keep in touch with the college about their being part of HM Forces - it is good to see them being successful.”
Ruth Wright, Divisional Treasurer for SSAFA South West Durham Division said: “Working with the pupils has been an absolute pleasure. We thank them for their hard work, they have made so many veterans day so special with these afternoon teas allowing them to celebrate VE Day in a memorable way.”
