More parents set to book term-time holidays

Would you take your kids out of school during term time if you could get away with it?

We’ve been asking shoppers in the North East after hearing that an Isle of Wight Dad, who was fined for taking his daughter out of school, had that decision overturned in court.

Most mams and dads told us they’d take kids on holiday one or two days earlier or later than usual, but some completely disagree despite soaring costs of getaways at peak times.

Now, travel agents across the North East warn that more and more parents will take the risk.

Nick Coulthard, Director of Gazelle Travel in Durham, said:

“I do think from having conversations with parents now, people think well what’s a few days here and there, what’s four or five days if your child is a very good attender. There certainly will be people considering it anyway.

“If there’s going to be significant saving, and because of what’s happened in the ruling people will say well I’ll take the child out of school for a couple of says, it won’t do any harm and if there’s a fine then so be it.”

Raj Aggarwal, Finance Director and Sales Consultant at JLM Travel based in Gateshead, said:

“You will see more and more parents challenging this ruling. They’ll say on this basis of this ruling I can’t see why I can’t take my child out; my child has been in attendance for the rest of the school year.

“It’s been a trickle effect but soon the trickle becomes larger and larger and you’ll find larger and larger amounts of parents thinking I’ll do that. As they push the boundaries then more and more people will be inclined to work that way.”
