Police are appealing for help from the public in their investigation into an incident in Middlesbrough, that left a man in hospital.

It's thought the 61-year-old was hit with a glass bottle, after being approached by two men and asked for a cigarette, which he gave them.

He fell to the ground, and needed hospital treatment for "numerous facial injuries," detectives say.

The incident happened around 2.30am last Saturday morning (18th September), on Park Vale Road.

In a statement, Cleveland Police added: 'The only description we have is of two white males.

'Anyone who may have been in the area and seen the men or the incident itself, including anyone with dash cam or private CCTV, is asked to contact Middlesbrough CID via the 101 number, quoting ref 157967.

'If you don’t want to speak to police you can pass information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org or by phoning 0800 555 111.'
