Mark Webster confirmed as Chief Constable of Cleveland Police
He's expected to take up the post in April
Mark Webster has been confirmed as the new Chief Constable of Cleveland Police following a meeting of the area’s Police and Crime Panel today. (Thursday 10th February 2022).
Mr Webster was selected following a rigorous recruitment and assessment process, developed in partnership with the College of Policing - the national centre of excellence for police leadership and recruitment.
Police and Crime Commissioner Steve Turner’s proposed appointment was unanimously approved at a confirmation hearing which took place at the Redcar Community Heart this morning.
Mark is currently the Deputy Chief Constable at Cumbria Police and has also held senior roles within the National Crime Agency and Greater Manchester Police.
His suitability for the role was tested during a two-day assessment process which included:
• An internal panel made up of police officers, staff and volunteers, as well as representatives from a range of staff networks, staff associations and Unison
• An external panel representing a wide range of local public sector, criminal justice and charitable organisations committed to keeping Cleveland’s communities safe
• A final appointment panel, chaired by the PCC
Chair of the all-party Police and Crime Panel, Cllr Tony Riordan, said:
“During the hearing Mark was able to evidence an extremely high level of competence required for taking command of Cleveland Police.
“He answered an array of questions put to him by the panel, focusing on his skills and ability to move the Force forward and out of engagement with HMICFRS.
“Mark impressed the panel with his forthright answers, honesty, and a clear drive to lead the force in providing a quality service for the communities in Cleveland.
“The panel looks forward to supporting Mark and Steve in providing an efficient and effective police service.”

“I’m delighted that the panel have confirmed my preferred candidate Mark Webster as the next Chief Constable of Cleveland Police.
“After a thorough search, I’m confident he is the right person to lead the force forward as they continue to improve the service they deliver to Cleveland’s communities.
“Mark has an impressive track record in policing, including several years’ experience as a Chief Officer and in tackling serious violence at a national and international level with the National Crime Agency.
“His significant experience, clear vision for improving the force and commitment to partnership working make him a fantastic choice for the next Chief Constable. I look forward to working with him to make Cleveland safer for those who live and work here.”
Mr Webster is expected to take up his post in April.
