A man has been jailed after leading police on a high-speed chase from Darlington to Stockton before crashing and trying to run away on foot.

44 year old Mariusz Babut, from Birmingham, refused to stop his VW Passat on the A1(M) near Darlington on February 19 this year. Police suspected he was driving with false plates.

He reached speeds of up to 130mph as he tried to evade police on a dual carriageway and sped through a 30 zone at 80mph.

He only stopped when he crashed into a VW Beetle on a residential street in Stockton. He ran away and tried to hide in a garden before his arrest.

In the boot of his car was 8kg of vacuum-packed cannabis, worth around £80,000. Officers also found around £5,000 in cash stored at his home.

He was jailed for 32 months last week at Teesside Crown Court.
