People in Teesside urged to remember those killed in Holocaust
Today is Holocaust Memorial Day
It is Holocaust Memorial Day and people across Teesside are being urged to remember the millions who died.
It coincides with the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau - the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp.
There is also a chance to remember the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Darlington Councillor Gerald Lee is Chair of the 'Celebrating Communities' group, he has organised a Holocaust Memorial Day in the town for years, and said: "There are people of course, quite a lot of them, who deny the Holocaust and there are other people who say well it was so many years ago so therefore they shouldn't be forgotten. I just question why should we forget? Millions of people were killed and died for no reason whatsoever.
"The Holocaust isn't just about the millions of lives that were lost, we must remember that there were thousands and thousands of Polish people, Russians, Gypsies and the people who were losing their lives.
"Even if we just sit down and think, or when you're driving, to just give some thought. The reason we should remember is because of the tremendous courage of the people who were willing to give their lives to save other people who'd they'd never met. We shouldn't stand back and let evil things go on."
