A drunk driver who seriously injured two teenagers in a hit-and-run crash outside Middlesbrough Empire has been jailed.

Hadi Hamid, 40, drove into 18-year-olds Luke Mason and Matthew Lockwood in the early hours of October 15th.

The victims were crossing Corporation Road when they were hit by the car before driver Hamid left the scene.

Mr Mason was put in an induced coma after breaking his back and Mr Lockwood suffered facial injuries.

Hamid pleaded guilty to two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving - having previously claimed he was not at the wheel at the time of the accident.

He was jailed for four years and banned from driving for 12 years at Teesside Crown Court.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Alastair Crawford, said: “I accept the sentence given to Hadi Hamid today. His actions left two young men with serious injuries that evening, and they still suffer today as a result of what he did. He attempted to evade justice, but ultimately, the evidence put before him was overwhelming and he eventually pleaded guilty.

“Ultimately, it was Hadi Hamid’s decision to drive at speed whilst drunk and now he will have to accept the consequences of his actions. Hopefully this sentence will go some way in helping the victims and their families to move forward with their lives."
