Darlington's new Garden Village is the REAL reason developers want to build a link road to the A66, say campaigners

We told you yesterday about the consultation plans for a new development on the outskirts of Darlington,

It would be serviced by the planned link road from the A66 - which has been hotly disputed by campaigners and residents.

Mel Wilson is from the No to the Darlington North Link Road group;

“One of the reasons they wanted to put this road in was so they had infrastructure for this development, which we knew all along,

“But with Four and half thousand homes you’re going to get more than four and a half thousand cars on the road.

“Why do we need that many, that’s a 7% increase on the current population, Darlington isn’t growing that fast,

“Where are they bringing these jobs, where are these jobs going to be?”

Theakston Estates, working with Lichfield planning agents, is planning the development on the north side of Darlington, on land west of Barmpton and east of the A167, directly north of Whinfield, in an area around the Skerne.

Darlington Borough Council's draft Local Plan has identified the area as a potential major development site as it seeks to deliver 10,000 new homes over the next 20 years.

We reached out to Lichfield planning agency but have yet to hear back from them.
