Police are appealing for witnesses after a one-vehicle collision in Washington has left a man fighting for his life.

At around 4.40pm yesterday (Sunday 20th) we received a report that a Silver Mondeo had been travelling east on Sulgrave Road when, for reasons yet to be established, the car has come off the road and collided with a tree.

Officers and emergency services attended and a 29-year-old passenger was taken to hospital with a serious, life-threatening injuries.

The driver, a 35-year-old man, initially left the scene on foot but has since been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody at this time.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and Sergeant Matt Sykes from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department is now asking for any witnesses to come forward.

He said: “This was a very serious incident which has left a 29-year-old man in a critical condition. The road was closed in both directions for a number of hours to allow for a thorough clean up and forensic investigation.

“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing and we have already spoken to a number of witnesses who remained at the scene.

“However we are keen to hear from anyone else who saw what happened. There was a large crowd of people at the scene of the collision and we would urge anyone who has not yet spoken to police to get in touch. This is so we can build up a clear picture of the moments which led up to this incident.

“The collision occurred at about 4.35pm so if you were near to Sulgrave Road at that time of the collision, or saw the vehicle before or after this time, please get in touch with us. We are especially interested in hearing from any motorists that may have dash-cam footage.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101 or using the Tell us Something page on our website quoting log 764 20/06/21.
