Building momentum on a key North East road upgrade
There will be overnight closures on the A19 this weekend (7th - 9th Aug)

Major work to upgrade a busy Teesside section of the A19 is progressing well during its final phase, as it strives for early completion in the autumn.
Highways England’s work to increase the capacity of the A19 between the A1027 Norton and A689 Wynyard junctions is ahead of schedule, several months earlier than planned.
During the summer new concrete central barriers have been installed and a new, quieter concrete surface is being laid. The work is part of a £300m+ investment into a suite of crucial upgrades along the A19 to improve safety, cut congestion and boost access for drivers across the North East.
Highways England senior project manager Keith Bradley said:
“As we continue working on the final stages of improvements for this section of the A19, we need to carry out further, essential carriageway work. This will involve weekend and overnight closures during August.
“Safety is our number one priority and for this reason work of this type must be carried out while our roads are the quietest. This is typically at times that cause the least disruption to our roads and also ensures the safety of the workforce. However, we’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience while we carry out this vital improvement.”
To complete the road resurfacing and other work the A19 northbound is to be closed for the whole weekend from 8pm on Friday 6 August, to 6am on Monday 9 August:
• On the Friday night, the A19 will be closed from 8pm to 6am between the A139 and the A689
• From 6am on Saturday till 8pm on Sunday it will be closed between the A1027 and the A689
• On the Sunday night, the A19 will be closed from 8pm to 6am between the A139 and the A689
• The westbound A1027 will also be closed throughout the weekend from the Billingham Motors (Wolviston Road) roundabout to the A19 roundabout where it crosses the A19. This will allow the diverted traffic leaving the northbound A19 at this junction to flow more freely
Further closures
The A19 will also be closed overnight - between 8pm and 6am - on the following carriageways:
• Southbound between the A689 and A139
o Monday 2 to Thursday 5 August
• Northbound between the A139 and A689
o Monday 9 to Friday 13 August
o Monday 16 to Friday 20 August
o Monday 23 to Friday 27 August
o Tuesday 31 August to Friday September 3
Clearly signed diversion routes will be place while all work takes place.
We’d advise drivers to plan ahead if using this section of the A19 and visit Highways England’s dedicated page on the scheme, follow the regional Twitter feed at @HighwaysNEAST or Facebook feed to check for updates.
