Middlesbrough psychologist heads to the US
Dr Amanda Wood has been granted a prestigious fund to research veterans in Tampa, Florida.
A Middlesbrough pyschologist is heading to America to see how they treat their veterans, and what we could bring back here to the UK.
Dr Amanda Wood specialises in helping ex-servicemen and women struggling with mental health problems.
She's been conducting research into what support is available for the entire family affected by military life.
Her own father inspired her research, after his brother failed to come home from war, aged just 21.
As part of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, Dr Wood has been granted £6000 to travel to Tampa Florida.
She'll be spending time at refuge camps for veterans and their families, to see if these could be implemented back here in the UK.
Dr Wood said: "One of the things they do have in the States which I would like to see in the United Kingdom is that nurses are learning about the military.
"The culture, the stigma, the values and the beliefs.
"Then people are knowledgable, because without knowledge we can't move forward.
"I've been invited to the Lone Survivor Foundations which provides family retreats.
"This involves horse therapy, it involves yoga.
"I would very much like to look at this model and hopefully in the future replicate a similar model in the UK."
