The mam of a murdered Redcar teenager says too many youngsters in the region are still carrying knives.

Theresa Cave's son Chris was stabbed to death in 2003, when he was only 17-years-old.

She now runs the Chris Cave Foundation, which educates local children about the dangers of carrying a knife.

She says: "I try to get the kids to get into the position of how your mother would feel if you had to go through this.

"If they had to see you on a table, if they had to see you laid in a coffin.

"If they had to unzip a body bag and see your body in there.

"How would your mother feel, because that's what I had to do."

The region's police forces have joined together this week to launch their 'Surrender Your Knife' campaign.

It will see knife bins placed across the North East for people to surrender any weapons that could've been used for crime.

They'll be in place for the next two weeks.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, Barry Coppinger said: “We are proud to support this national initiative which will help to raise awareness about the damage and destruction that knives can cause.

"Over the next two weeks members of the public will have the opportunity to surrender knives safely and anonymously.

"Removing knives from our streets will help protect our communities and provide a safer environment for the whole area."
