A man has died after the car he was in crashed on the outskirts of Crook.

A man has died after the car he was in crashed on the outskirts of Crook.

Shane Dowson was a rear passenger in a Vauxhall Vectra, which was travelling on the B6299 from Tow Law to Sunniside when it left the roadside and crashed at 6.30pm on Sunday (February 28).

The 22-year-old, who lived in North Bitchburn, near Crook, was confirmed dead at the scene.

The driver, also aged 22 and from Willington, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for treatment to back and wrist injuries.

He was then arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.

The other two passengers were a 27-year-old man from Crook, who sustained minor head injuries, and a 20-year-old man from Willington, who has been receiving treatment in the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough for chest Injuries.

Shane leaves his mother, father, brother and three sisters, as well as girlfriend Deone Sully and their three-month-old son Kian.
