Despite social media being a part of everyday life research conducted by Mentos has revealed that 52% of those surveyed would describe themselves as a hermit!

The survey also revealed that a high proportion of people would go to all lengths to avoid a bit of social interaction, from crossing the road to avoid talking to a friend or neighbour, to lying saying they haven't received a message when they have really.

Earlier this week it was World Hello Day so Celebrity Big Brother winner Rylan Clark-Neal was given the task of saying "hello" to 10 people he wouldn't normally say hello to and this is what happened.

Do you say hello to your fellow commuters or would you rather travel in silence? The research has found that 62% said they prefer face-to-face conversations to communicating digitally, however 38% said they lack confidence and become shy when meeting new people.

57% of those polled said they had formed a surprising friendship after they broke the ice with someone, so next time you're on the bus or the train why not say "hello" or just give someone a friendly smile? You might find a new friendship soon blossoming.
