A woman pushing her baby in a pram has suffered a life-threatening head injury after being hit by a car in Bournemouth.

The crash involving a Toyota RAV4 happened near a play area in Red Hill Park shortly before 9.00am on Tuesday.

The woman, in her 30s, reportedly pushed her baby to safety.

She was flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital with a life-threatening head injury.

The baby was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was not hurt.

Police cordoned off the area around the collision

The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene, police said.

A 38-year-old man from the New Milton was later arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

Police Sergeant Richard Stroud, of the road traffic unit, said: "We are investigating the circumstances of this collision and I am appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and either witnessed the collision or captured it on dashcam to please contact Dorset Police.

"I would like to thank motorists for their patience while the road closure was in place so we could carry out our investigation."
