Latest statistics recorded by the police show that transgender identity hate crime has risen by 56%.
It’s not the only form of hate crime that has risen, with sexual orientation hate crimes increasing by 41% and disability hate crimes by 43%,
Religious hate crimes rose by 37% - the highest level its been since records began in 2012.
Overall the majority of hate crimes recorded by police were racially motivated - in line with previous years - and increased by 19% from the year ending 2021, the figures show.
Police forces recorded 109,843 race hate crimes, 8,730 religious hate crimes, 26,152 sexual orientation hate crimes, 14,242 disability hate crimes and 4,355 transgender hate crimes.
Hate crimes could have more than one motivating factor
Some crimes are recorded as having more than one motivating factor.
The Home Office said it is uncertain to what degree the rise is genuine, or due to continued recording improvements and more victims having the confidence to report these crimes to the police.
The rise seen in the latest year may also have been affected by the lower levels of crime recorded in the year due to pandemic restrictions, it added.
Police-recorded hate crime in England and Wales has risen by more than a quarter in a year, according to Home Office figures.
Some 155,841 hate crimes were recorded by the police in the year to March 2022 - up 26% from the previous year and the biggest annual rise since 2017.
