Cars have been set alight and fireworks thrown at police in Cardiff at the scene of a serious crash in the Ely area.

South Wales Police were called to Snowdon Road at around 6pm last night following reports of a collision.

The force says it faced what's described as 'large scale disorder' until the early hours of this morning.

It's understood riot police were deployed and arrests have been made.

The force says the collision "had already occurred when officers arrived".

Pictures on social media appear to show a police car with its windscreen smashed and wing mirrors broken.

Footage filmed from the scene also showed people - some wearing masks - throwing fireworks and missiles at police officers with riot shields.

Shortly before midnight a car was set on fire while a second vehicle was overturned and before being set alight.

During the course of the night, South Wales Police issued a statement urging people to avoid speculation - adding they would provide an update as soon as they can.
