An off-duty Metropolitan Police officer who was stabbed whilst trying to intervene in a Luton knife-point robbery, has been described as 'heroic'.

The officer was taken to hospital following the attack just outside Luton Point in George Street on Saturday afternoon.

Two men are believed to have robbed the victim of his moped, whilst armed with a large knife or machete.

Offenders stabbed the officer before fleeing the scene - they're described as being in their early 20s, with one wearing a black jacket and trousers, the other was wearing a dark-coloured jacket and grey tracksuit bottoms with a white strip down the side.

The officer was taken to hospital for his injuries, which aren't thought to be life-threatening.

"His actions were nothing short of heroic"

Temporary Chief Constable Dan Vajzovic said: “The courage of the off-duty officer is to be commended as, in putting himself in harm’s way, he undoubtedly helped to prevent any further harm to the public. Wanton violence of this level is utterly appalling and has no place on the streets of our county.

“Thankfully, the officer is expected to make a full recovery, though this story could have been very different. I speak on behalf of the force and wider public in thanking him for his bravery and selflessness in the line of duty. His actions were nothing short of heroic.”

Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire John Tizard also commended the off-duty officer's actions, saying they were "ready to step into danger to protect others".

The PCC thanked the officer for his "courageous action" and wished him a quick recovery.

Detectives believe many people may have witnessed the attack, which took place in the middle of a busy area of Luton.

The victim is yet to have been identified, and is believed to have left the scene. Appeals are underway to find them, and for any further witnesses to come forward.

High visibility patrols in Luton will remain in place.
