A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was killed and a second seriously injured in an early morning collision with a car.

Police were called by a member of the public at around 5.50am on Saturday 3 September to Cricket Inn Road in Park Hill, Sheffield, to reports of the incident, after which the car left the scene, South Yorkshire Police said.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended and the road was closed between Maltravers Road and the roundabout at the junction with Woodbourn Road and Manor Way.

"Despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, one of the men, aged in his 60s, later died of his injuries," the force said.

"His family have been informed and are being supported by officers at this extremely difficult time.

"The second man was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

"Investigations are at an early stage and the vehicle involved is being sought.

"A 31-year-old man from Sheffield has since been located and arrested on suspicion of murder."

South Yorkshire Police said officers wanted to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the lead-up to the collision which might help with the investigation, especially passing motorists, and people with dash-cam or CCTV footage that captured the collision.

The force said anyone with information could contact them through their live chat, online portal or by calling 101, quoting incident number 211 of September 3, or give information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers via their website or by calling their UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111.
