M62 closed eastbound following 'serious' vehicle collision

West Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation after a man was seriously injured in a crash on the M62.

Officers first received reports of a vehicle being stolen from an address in Chapeltown in Leeds at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday (June 1st).

The car, which was identified as a white Hyundai i10, was later picked up by patrolling officers that been policing the M62.

After requesting the car to stop as it headed eastbound, the car failed to halt for officers and a pursuit began as it left Leeds.

The chase eventually ended when the car crashed into the central reservation midway between junctions 32 and 33, near the town of Castleford.

Emergency services were called to the scene, who took the driver of the car to hospital for his injuries, which have been described as "serious", but not life-threatening.

Enquiries into the crash and how the car had been stolen are ongoing, and police have now appealed to the public for any information.

Whilst the incident is being investigated, West Yorkshire Police have referred the matter to the Independent Officer for Police Conduct.
