The final report into the Grenfell Tower fire is due later today
Last updated 4th Sep 2024
The final report into the Grenfell Tower fire inquiry is due to be released later today.
The inquiry was launched by former Prime Minister Theresa May after 72 people died when the Grenfell Tower went up in flames.
The building was later to be found to be covered in flammable cladding, along with thousands of other buildings across the UK.
What to expect from the inquiry report
The report is set to be released to the public at 11am and is the second and final report from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
Over 320,000 pieces of evidence and witness testimonies contributed to the inquiry which sat for over 300 public hearings.
One of the key focuses is expected to be how buildings like Grenfell Tower were allowed to be covered in the flammable cladding.
It wasn't just the Grenfell Tower that had this cladding. Thousands of buildings across the UK have this same cladding with campaign groups still fighting to get their cladding changed 7 years later.
We are also expected to hear about the days after the fire, and how those made homeless afterwards were supported by the local authority and local communities.
Finally, we are expected to find out how much the UK Government knew about the cladding and if they were aware of the major fire risk it created.
What happens after the reports release
Following the release of the report, many will be looking to how the Prime Minister Kier Starmer will respond.
The first Prime Minister's Questions since the end of the summer recess will happen this afternoon, with many expecting the Prime Minister to potentially outline what his ministers will do with the recommendations from the report.
Campaign groups such as Justice 4 Grenfell and Grenfell United, who include survivors of the tragedy, are also expected to give their reactions to the report in the hours after the report is released.
The report will be released to the public at 11am.
