Firefighters have faced "difficult conditions" as high winds fanned the flames of a large fire in a historic hotel on Brighton seafront.
The blaze broke out at the Royal Albion Hotel shortly before 5.30pm on Saturday.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said 15 fire engines from across Sussex were called to the scene.
Fire crews were expected to work through the night to put the flames out.
There are no reported injuries.
Smoke billowed across the seafront as people gathered to watch.
A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "High winds are creating difficult conditions for fire crews and firefighters are expected to continue dealing with the fire through the night.
"As a precaution East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service working alongside Sussex Police have evacuated surrounding buildings.
"We are aware of significant smoke in the area which is being made worse by wind. We strongly advise you to avoid the area."
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey said: "Very sad scenes in our city this evening.
"Our thanks to all the emergency services who are on the scene."
Brighton MP Caroline Lucas thanked the emergency services involved in dealing with the fire in a message on twitter.
The historic hotel suffered serious damage in a fire in November 1998 when flames ripped through the upper floors of the building.
