It was a moment that brought hope to the Yes campaign – Dundee said Yes to independence. 78.8% of the Dundee population registered to vote turned out – a turn out in any election which would have been met with great excitement but a turn out tonight that was met with some disappointment. There had been hopes as many as 90% of the population in Dundee would have taken their opportunity to vote. It was also a night of drama with the count twice being halted at the Dundee International Sports Centre due to a fire alarm going off. Everyone had to be evacuated and stood out in the rain until the fire service gave the green light for us all to return. Counting resumed and shortly before 4am we had a result. 57.3% of voters (53,620) backed a Yes vote. The declaration was met with huge cheers from the Yes supporters – who celebrated Scotland’s first Yes victory. Was the result ever really in doubt in Dundee? Even before counting got underway – Dundee was odd’s on to deliver a Yes vote – one of only two cities in Scotland to do so.
