Canning Backs Hasselbaink

Photo by Jeff Holmes Hamilton manager Martin Canning has backed Nigel Hasselbaink to produce his best spell in Scotland after international clearance finally came through for the striker. The 24-year-old is set to kick-start his second stint at New Douglas Park when Accies travel to Celtic Park on Sunday after the documents belatedly came through to approve his transfer from Greek top-flight side Veria. Hasselbaink played for St Mirren and St Johnstone after his initial spell in Lanarkshire and Canning feels the best is yet to come from the striker, who came in after the departures of top goalscorers Tony Andreu and Mickael Antoine-Curier. The player-manager, who is still looking for his first win following seven games in charge, said: "I think some bit of paperwork was missing but that has now been tidied up and that gives everyone a lift. "It's been frustrating not being able to get him on the pitch and he will definitely be involved on Sunday. "One of the major factors in trying to get him back was that we knew him. I knew him personally from being here and he is proven at this level. "There is no real risk attached to him, he is a good player and he is still young. "He is still hungry and he wants to really make a name for himself. "Being honest, I don't think he has shown the best of what he has got yet. "I hope he can kick on and really have the career he hopes to have. "He wants to score goals and build a reputation as a top player because he has got all the attributes to do that. "The last time he was here he was 19 and just a kid learning his trade. Now we have got him back with five years' experience I hope he can really kick on."
