Wright delighted by Watt’s arrival at St Johnstone

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright was delighted to finally get his man after signing Tony Watt on a one-year deal.

Wright revealed he was hoping to land the former Celtic striker from Charlton last year but was unable to push through a deal.

But he has now succeeded in signing the 24-year-old following his exit from Belgian outfit OH Leuven.

Wright told the Saints' website: "Tony is a player I know a lot about and we actually enquired about him last January, as well as when he was at Charlton Athletic.

"So I'm delighted to finally get him here and he will add a lot to our squad and increases our attacking options.

"He's the kind of striker that can score you a goal out of nothing and he's hungry to get going."

Watt shot to prominence in November 2012 when he fired the winning goal for Neil Lennon's Hoops against Barcelona in the Champions League but that famous strike failed to act as a launch-pad for his career.

In the six years since, the former Airdrie youngster has had stints at seven different clubs including Blackburn and Hearts and three in Belgium.

"Tony's still only 24 years old and he comes to the club with a clean slate," said the Northern Irishman. "We want him to realise his potential here and he knows how I operate and he's keen to be a part of it."

Watt - Saints' second signing of the new season following Drey Wright's arrival from Colchester - goes straight into the squad for Tuesday's friendly clash with Berwick Rangers.

The frontman - who won his one and only Scotland cap to date against the Czech Republic back in March 2016 - added: "I'm itching to play - it's been a while since I've been involved and after training with the boys this morning I was really impressed with the standard. I can't wait to get started."
