There's an appeal for information after a woman was sexually assaulted on a train between Newcastle and Perth.

Police say a 24 year old was twice approached by a man in his 40s after she got on a London to Inverness service on Sunday afternoon.

The man - who's described as being around 6 foot tall with a shaved head and tattooed arms - got off at Perth.

He was under the influence of alcohol and is believed to have been in the company of another man.

Detective Constable Andrew Egan, the BTP officer in charge of the enquiry, is appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward: "This was an extremely unsavoury and unwarranted assault and I’m grateful that the victim has brought it to our attention. This was a busy service and I am anxious to speak with anyone who was on the train and has information which can help me identify the man responsible to contact BTP as a matter of urgency."
