Sony says the new PlayStation 5 will deliver a 'new era for gaming.'

The console's on sale in the UK now, less than a fortnight after Xbox put out it's latest model.

The release comes at a good time for Dundee company Bitloom, which will publish it's first game next month, three years after work on it begun.

Programmer and designer James Morwood thinks the timing can only be good for them.

"We're a really small team. It's our first big game and to get it on a new console right after it launches, is really exciting," he said.

"The fact that the new consoles are backwards compatible, so if someone buys the game on the old console, they can play the game on the new one.

"It's always been different in the past, you don't know if it will be compatible with previous generations of games."

The company, which is made up of Abertay University graduates, will make the adventure game PHOGS! available on all platforms.

Programmer and composer Henry Pullan says the compatibility of the new console is helpful.

"It's been a bit of a relief to know we don't have to worry too much about that, because the technology has allowed us to have the game work on the PS5," he said.

But one of Dundee's top designers thinks it'll only be large gaming firms that see the benefits of the latest invention.

Mike Dailly, one of the creators of Grand Theft Auto, said: "You're just looking at the bigger companies that'll get access to it. It'll take a year or so before it starts to filter down," he said.

"It really depends on what Sony will do in terms of letting these smaller games in, as it'll be going for a bigger AAA titles.

"They're the console bigger and better but they obviously take lots for effort to produce these massively graphical, rich content of games.

"So the teams that produce them will be pretty huge, so it's going to make that divide much bigger."
