WATCH: Campaigners hopeful of St Andrews rail link relaunch

Campaigners say bringing back the St Andrews rail link is essential if the town's to continue to grow.

The line, which connected the town to Leuchars station, was closed in the late 60s.

Fife Council has vowed to look into funding a feasibility study it through the Tay Cities Deal - which will bring more than a billion pounds worth of funding into the region.

Convener of the StARLink campaign, Jane Ann Liston believes the increase in St. Andrews' popularity over the years has taken it's toll over the years has taken it's toll.

She said:"People are now starting to think, 'what are we going to do about St. Andrews?'

"There are too many cars coming in but if we stop the cars, then we stop the people coming in so they now might be starting to think it possible because of the borders line.

"Fife Council might be starting to think it possible to reinstate the route because of the borders line because when you consider that was thirty miles that had to be built- St. Andrews needs 5.

"It would also enable direct services to Dundee and Edinburgh." Fife Council said: “As part of what has the potential to be a once in a generation investment in infrastructure, the Tay Cities Deal submission document

“Over 50 projects are included in the Tay Cities Deal submission that sets out as a series of “asks” and “offers” across 100 pages.

"It cites the opportunities and challenges for the Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perth & Kinross economy over the next 20 years and details how investment will help the region become fairer and smarter through inclusive growth.”
