Vandals target Arbroath Abbey
Stonework at the historic site was covered in spray paint.
Vandalism at Arbroath Abbey could cost thousands of pounds to repair.
Stonework at the historic site was covered in spray paint some time between 5pm on Tuesday, July 3, and 7am on Thursday, July 5.
Historic Scotland say this could take more than a week to remove and cost well into four figures.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “The Abbey is currently undergoing some exterior work so scaffolding is in place, which has been used by the persons responsible to gain access.
“This is highly dangerous, and we would ask parents in the area to be fully aware of what your children are doing, where they are going, and who they are with.
“We would be particularly interested to hear from any parents whose children have come home in the evenings with paint on their clothes or smelling of solvent.”
A spokeswoman for Historic Environment Scotland said: “We are disappointed by a recent incident of graffiti vandalism at Arbroath Abbey, which has resulted in damage to the Abbey’s stone work which we are now working to repair.
“Acts of vandalism to Scotland’s historic sites are unacceptable, and we would urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Police Scotland.
