Dundee United have warned their supporters they are putting the club at risk of a stadium ban if they continue taking pyrotechnics to Tannadice.
The Taysiders have reacted to an incident before Friday night's Ladbrokes Premiership 4-1 defeat to Celtic.
Two smoke bombs were set off in the Eddie Thompson Stand just before kick-off.
The Scottish Professional Football League have confirmed they are awaiting their match delegate's report before deciding if action is to be taken.
But the United board want their fans to know they are putting the club on a collision course with the governing body if they continue to ignore bans on flares and smoke bombs.
In a statement, the club said: Dundee United would like to remind supporters about a zero tolerance policy with regard to the use and carrying of pyrotechnics.
The use of pyrotechnics, including smoke bombs and flares, within football stadiums is extremely dangerous and a serious offence.
Any supporter identified to have committed such an act will be banned by the club and also subject to the possibility of criminal prosecution.
Dundee United Football Club will work closely with the police, security and football authorities to eradicate this, and other, types of spectator misconduct.
We would also like to remind supporters that if there are incidents of this nature in the future the football authorities have the power to impose serious sanctions including financial penalty and order matches to be played behind closed doors.

The Scottish Football Association is currently investigating events during Celtic's William Hill Scottish Cup tie at Stranraer last week, when flash bangs and smoke bombs were set off.
