Unite expresses concern at potential cuts to council jobs in Dundee
Council bosses say there will be "significant reduction" in roles as they look to plug a near £17m shortfall
There will be a "significant reduction" of council jobs in Dundee as bosses look to plug a near £17 milion black hole.
Voluntary redunancies and early retirements are said to be the council's priority.
Bob McGregor from unite the union thinks it's a worrying time for workers.
"We have grave concerns over what jobs are going to do and how the council is going to deal with that," he said.
"We don't have any detail on that as of yet so we will wait until we speak to the council and find out what it means.
"That's now well over £150m cut out of the council's budgets. It's strangling the council's effectively, it's really struggling to function.
"It's closing facilities, golf courses, shortening library hours. What it's delivering to the public is a lot worse than what it was before."
Councillors will discuss savings measures next week ahead of the council's budget date in March.
Depute policy and resources convener Councillor Willie Sawers said: “This report lays bare the difficult financial position the council faces and how we are trying to tackle it.
“There are no easy solutions and we will be faced with some very difficult decisions to make.
“However, we are focused on improving life in the city for the people of this city.
“People rightly want more jobs which pay a decent wage, they want high quality services, new housing, good quality schools and they want facilities that we all can be proud of. We do too.
“Over the next 12 months, Dundee City Council will focus on continuous improvement and to ensure that our bold and ambitious plans meet the expectations and requirements of all the people who live here.”
