Bomb disposal experts have been called after an unexploded device was found near a Highland school.

Police have urged people to stay away from the area and said Invergordon Academy, Park Primary School and nursery, and South Lodge Primary and nursery are closed while emergency services deal with the incident.

Roads around the area in the Highlands town have been cordoned off following the discovery on Tuesday night, by Ryan Junor and his son Shay.

"It's pretty mad", said Ryan, "as we just expected to find an old coin or something, but this is pretty crazy

"Hopefully people will be kept safe with it being so close to the school and people go along this route"

Ryan and Shay were out on their very first hunt having just got into metal detecting via a friend.

"I was out for breakfast with a couple of pals and one of them said he was getting into after finding an army badge, so I just bought a detector - plus my son is into artifacts and things like that", said Ryan.

"Obviously as soon as the comments came through on Facebook from others we soon knew to call 101.

"I mean to start off with we just thought it was a bit of copper pipe, had we known what it was we wouldn't have been putting shovels down around it!", said Ryan.

Part of the road between the junctions of Gordon Terrace and Academy Road is shut, and Davidson Drive is closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

The unexploded bomb that was discovered.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Emergency services are in attendance at Castle Terrace, Invergordon after an unexploded ordnance was found.

"A cordon has been put in place and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) has been contacted."
