Truck crashes through shop in Fife in apparent failed ATM raid
It happened at the Co-op store on Lauder Road.
Police were today appealing for information after a stolen dump truck was used in an apparent ATM ram raid bid at a supermarket.
A six-tonne dumper truck was found lodged in the wall of a Co-op store in Kirkcaldy's Lauder Road, close to the Fife town's Victoria Hospital, around 2.40am on Monday.
Police said the smash caused "significant damage" to the building.
Today it was still lodged in the wall, the corner of which had largely collapsed as a result, as police examined the scene.
The dumper collided feet away from a cash machine which is understood to have been the target of the raid.
The driver then fled and remains at large.
Officers said the truck, which is described as a six tonne Benford Swivel Dumper, had collided with the wall of the building.
It was subsequently reported stolen from a business premises in Hayfield Industrial Estate.
Detective Inspector Graeme Dursley, of Kirkcaldy CID, said: "The premises will remain closed while we conduct our investigations at the scene and a full assessment of the damage to the building will need to be carried out.
"I'd urge anyone who may have been in the area of Hayfield Industrial Estate or Lauder Road in the early hours of the morning to get in touch.
"If you saw any suspicious behaviour or may have witnessed the truck travelling between these two locations, then please come forward."
A spokesman for Police Scotland added: "Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
